Behind the Joy!

Joy Upshaw
Founder/Director, Head Coach
Joy Upshaw is one of the most accomplished and respected figures in American track and field, with a career spanning decades of excellence as an elite athlete, national team coach, and transformational sports leader.
She has represented Team USA on the world stage for more than three decades and is a 25-time World Masters Champion, holding multiple American and World Records across the hurdles, sprints, and long jump. Her competitive longevity and versatility are virtually unmatched in the sport.
As a coach, Joy has shaped athletes at every level, from first-time competitors to national champions. She served as U20 Head Coach for USA Track & Field, guiding the next generation of elite athletes, and in 2023 was honored with the USA Track & Field CEO Award in recognition of her leadership, integrity, and lasting impact on the sport.
Yet beyond medals, titles, and records, Joy is known for something rarer: her humanity. She leads with humility, generosity, and a deep belief in each athlete's potential. Practices often end with hand-painted ribbons, stickers, or small tokens, simple but powerful reminders that effort matters, character counts, and everyone belongs.
Joy's Jackrabbits is the living extension of that philosophy, competitive when appropriate, joyful always.
